The Long Wait
2026

The Long Wait was inspired by the rhododendron, Washington’s state flower, and by a bud I noticed in our garden when we moved to the Pacific Northwest ten years ago. Having grown up in a place without such distinct seasons, I assumed the small green bud would flower within a week or two. Instead, I watched and waited, checking on it each day and wondering what the bloom would look like. I did not know then that it would remain closed through the winter and open almost six months later, in spring.

This mural is painted from that same rhododendron when it finally bloomed in our garden. It reflects on patience, quiet transformation, and the unseen growth that happens during periods of waiting.

Unfurling
2024

Butterflies sometimes travel over two thousand miles in order to survive and continue their lineage. Seven painted canvas pieces are installed draping from a center point, mimicking a butterfly that has just emerged out of its chrysalis, a stage symbolizing a new beginning and a start of a long and an arduous journey.

From being unpopular and undesired to being the most resilient plants, the weeds shed some light on the human psyche – Our need to be wanted and our need to have control. This installation is a commemoration and celebration of these unloved but tenacious species.
